Field service engineers: Life in the hotel
Wow, you got a job as a Field Service Engineer! That sounds great, but is it really? The flying, rental cars, hotel life, and good pay, what could be a better job for a young single male. At first, the job sounds great, then it hits you. How much stability is their in your new life? You could be in Boston today, next week you could be sent to another project in Tampa for 2 days, then back to Boston. That is when you start to realize you have no control over your life and you have to be very careful when planning events. It does not matter if you plan for a weekend, because you may be at a site for longer then they plan or vice versa.
Typically the company will lay out a schedule,maybe a month long or a year long schedule, that lets you know where and when you next move is coming up. This is a great opportunity to visit new places, but is also taxing if you are trying to develop a relationship or maintain contact with your friends.
If you are the type of person that is not in a relationship, this is a great opportunity to see new places and build a nice bank account. On the other hand, if you are in even the smallest relationship, this is not worth the benefits, unless your partner is willing to move with you.
