Lincoln’s Boyhood Home
The Illini family gaped. They’d never seen a woman do that sort of thing before not in public in Indiana, at any rate. “They’d be even more dumbfounded if they knew this New Zealander is fifty-two,” she said as she split the rail next to the Indiana log cabin. The rail-splitter from overseas gloated. Not only was she good at doing in logs, she was an excellent navigator on our trip through the United States.
We were in Indiana after a serpentine trip through West Virginia and Kentucky. The trip was spawned from the visionary text Blue Highways by William Least Heat Moon. Our goal was to find America beyond the Interstate. There Read the rest of this entry »
No CommentsShould baseball introduce tougher steroid policies?
A few years ago, when she was a junior in high school, my friends’ daughter (call her Ashley) started dating a boy her parents disapproved of. Let’s call him Alex. He wasn’t a bad kid, but he wasn’t very bright-he’d been held back twice-and he came from a broken home and lived in a rough neighborhood. Rather than hang a “verboten” sign around Alex’s neck, my friends discretely kept an eye on the boy and their daughter. They took the “bring him on over” approach: we’re opening the pool Saturday, Ashley, bring Alex over. We’re having a birthday party for your brother next weekend. You’re invited, of course, and so is your friend Alex.
Do you see what mom and Read the rest of this entry »
No CommentsBest horror movies of 2006
The year of 2006 was not a standout in terms of horror movies. Too many of the films were derivative. Too many relied on sheer buckets of blood instead of the thoughtful application of terror. Too few were original. And there we have it, the best horror movies of 2006 had those precious elements that fans of the horror genre recognize as value added: great special effects, they are original in concept and/or execution (forgive the atrocious pun), and they understand the creation of terror. These movies are the ones that stand out.
5. Wolf Creek by Greg Mclean. Okay, I’m cheating. This was released at the very end of 2005. But it’s Read the rest of this entry »
No CommentsMeetings – Swan Hotel
Â
It’s not easy finding the right venue for group meetings, seminars or conferences. There are so many things to consider. The size of the venue, the facilities it has to offer, is it easy to find, is it the right location for everyone you need to attend? Also, does it set the right tone and everything has to be within budget. Getting all of the above is sometimes quite a task and can take a considerable amount of research, time and patience.
The first thing to do is consider what is essential to your business event. Planning is the key to organising any conference, seminar or meeting. If this is done right you’re on the road to a Read the rest of this entry »
No CommentsBook reviews: Motor Mouth, by Janet Evanovich
Getting the inside scoop on NASCAR was never so much fun as when you ride the circuit with Alex Barnaby, a rooftop spotter for driver, Sam Hooker. Alex first impressed Hooker in METRO GIRL. She had grown up in her dad’s garage in Maryland, her mechanical skills learned very young and matured along with her refreshing beauty. A fresh face often bedecked with oil stains. Evidently, that initial impact took root when her mechanical talents were put to use, among other things. She’s all female and he can’t help it if he’s an irresistible hunk in the driver’s seat for Stiller Racing, a hunk without an ounce of mechanical ability. Put him in the car, Read the rest of this entry »
No CommentsNo Hotel Loan For You!
Meeting the requirements to get a decent hotel loan from your local lender can be difficult but not impossible. Let’s face it, what lender wants to put money up for a roach infested dump in downtown Detroit? You’d have to get a separate loan just for the insurance.
Most lenders will only finance hotel properties that are “flaggedâ€. In other words, most banks, public and private lenders will only provide hotel loans to individuals who are starting a franchise under certain major hotel/motel chains such as Best Western, Hilton, Super 8 and other well-established hospitality brands; Sid’s Sleep Shack need not apply. In addition to being a virtual nation-wide brand, the particular establishment in question needs to show a Read the rest of this entry »
