No CommentsAlbum reviews: We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank by Modest Mouse – Part 1
All hail the return of the mighty mouse! The Seattle veterans are a band whose albums you just know will be great before you even start listening. And the fabulously titled tenth album, We were dead before the ship even sank’. Is certainly no exception.
One of the things Modest Mouse do so well is being able to balance and combine such a wide spectrum of sounds, moods and styles. Moving seamlessly from the atmospheric and breathtakingly beautiful Little Motel’. A gentle but building song you get totally lost in. To the Pavement / Sonic Youth post-punk, disjointed aggressiveness and screaming, Jack White-esq vocals of songs like Steam Engenius’. From there into the alt-folk quirkiness of Spitting Venom’. Mother of the Bride Dress
As I triaged the wedding shower invitations that pour in during April and May, I remembered the joys and agonies of planning my own daughter’s wedding.
Held in her college town, which was also the hometown of the groom, and over 200 miles away , it was particularly stressful and complicated. But I had pictured that day since the moment the doctor said “It’s a girl,” and I was determined that everything be perfect, including me.
While shopping for just the right “Mother of the Bride” gown, I was dismayed to discover that I had turned into a plump, 43-year-old woman. Not that I wanted to outshine the bride, as if I ever could. I knew her Read the rest of this entry »

No CommentsHow to stay up all day if youve been up all night
Many times throughout my working career, as well as during two active duty recall hitches in the Navy, I had to drive alone from one coast to the other, a total of some 3,000 miles within a tight schedule. Of course, professional truckers have considerably more knowledge of this than I do, but I’ll tell my methods of staying awake on the road.
Since I didn’t have much money to spare during most of those trips, I rarely slept in a motel, but did my two-hour snoozes during daylight hours in the back of my car. For safety’s sake, I pulled up Read the rest of this entry »

No CommentsHow to find hotel discounts and deals in the US – Part 9
Hotel discounts and deals? Why? When you can find free places to stay! There are a few Internet communities of travelers who offer their couch for free, all you need to do is to create a profile, decide if you are available to host (in the case that you do not want to host yourself, you can make yourself available to go for a coffee or spend a couple of hours with visitors to your city), and every time you need to go out of town, check out the couches available in the city where you are heading, whether 100 miles away, or across the planet! I actually prefer this accommodation type because, apart from being free, you actually meet Read the rest of this entry »
