Are guided or solo tours better when traveling?

I am a tour guide in the Pacific Northwest. I have been doing this for 14 years, but I have been a traveler all of my life. Traveling is a subject I have some passion for. Because guiding tours is my profession, and I feel what I do is providing a genuine service to the public, I would have to say that there is definately a need for guided tours.

If you are planning a trip, and you have never been there before, it only makes sense that you get a guide who has been there and knows about your destination. Your guide will make special effort that you see everything there is to see. It is simply folly to stumble Read the rest of this entry »

A Foodie in St Barth Le Gaïac

Eating out is never exactly a chore in mainland France, and the visitor is in for just as much of a culinary delight on the French Caribbean island of St Barth.

There are over 50 restaurants mentioned in the excellent guide Saint-Barth Tables. It’s available free at the airport and lists all the menus and prices. In addition there are many smaller bars and eateries you might come across on your travels around the island.

Don’t expect too many “local” dishes as apart from fish, just about everything else has to be imported and the fashion seems to be plenty of “fusion food” catering for the most sophisticated and moneyed tastes – which of course are not Read the rest of this entry »

It would therefore be a better option to look at the whole idea of cheap hotels in this way: do you get full value for the money you pay? Are you completely satisfied with the kind of service that you get, for the money you Read the rest of this entry »

Hotel reviews: Crowne Plaza Hotel, Jerusalem

We just arrived back from a tour of Israel. We spent three nights at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Jerusalem. As was true in all of the hotels we stayed at, the entrances, lobby and restaurants, were of 4 or 5 star quality. The hotel is at one of the highest points in Jerusalem, and is a high-rise, so it can be seen from miles away. The entrance is well staffed with bellmen and the lobby is large and welcoming. Many of the fixtures and furniture are dated, but would have been considered luxurious 20 years ago. The front desk was staffed by courteous and helpful gentlemen. There are 4 or 5 small shops in the hotel. The souvenir shop Read the rest of this entry »

Efficiently Go Beyond the Scope and Concept of What you Do Now

Mr. William and Ms. Dorothy Hustead bought a small store in a tiny town near the South Dakota Badlands. From 1931 to 1936, they struggled through the Depression serving the town’s 326 impoverished residents.

One day in 1936, Ms. Hustead, bothered by the sound of cars on the nearby highway heading for Mount Rushmore, persuaded her husband to expand their business to serve these travelers. Mr. Hustead put up signs on the highway to draw visitors to their store, making a unique appeal. The signs said, “Free Ice Water . . . Wall Drug.” In the days before automobile air conditioning was common, that offer was an irresistible appeal.

Beginning from this humble expansion of its customer base, Read the rest of this entry »
